Doujouji (Dojoji Temple) Legends and folk tales in Japan have often been preserved in theatrical representations. Doujouji is one of such cases. The protagonists are a priest and a woman. Although he wants to stay loyal to his vows, the woman keeps pursuing him. Things turn out for the worst when he hides under the temple bell thinking he will be safe there. This version of Doujouji is special not only because it is so old (how come there has not been a remake yet. The director Kihachiro Kawamoto combined stop motion with standard animation to create a unique experience, but this also gives rendition to the puppet theatre where this story is still presented to these days. Intense and surprising, Doujouji reminds us of how life was visualized in the days of Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari, as well as the eternal conflict between duty and temptation incarnated in impossible love. 2. We actually know a lot about the Heian period thanks to Murasaki Shikibu. That being said, all the adaptations of Genji Monogatari tend to fall short of the mark. What they usually do is focus on just a few chapters of the story, in order to give space to the characters to grow in front of the audience. This film adaptation focuses on one of Genjis lovers, Lady Rokujo. In such regards, Kaguya-hime also makes an extra effort to focus on a female protagonist. The conflicts between what society expects and the feelings of the characters are also present. Besides that, we get the same time period, and a focus on the arts and lifestyle. 4. Harukanaru toki no naka de: Maihitoyo (Beyond the Stream of Time: A Dance in the Moonlight) Episodes: 1 Aired: Aug 19, 2006 This is the tale of three friends who are pulled to a different world: Akane, Tenma and Shimon. Akane becomes the Priestess of the Dragon God, the only one who can stop the demons from dominating that world. Together with her Hachiyou, the eight great warriors with special powers, she will travel and live many adventures. The movie Maihitoyo follows Akane when she finds a man with no memories. The Priestess decides to help him, discovering a cursed dance which might kill anyone who attempts to perform it. If you wanted an anime movie with the flavor of ancient Japan, here we have a similar option to Kaguya-hime no Monogatari. The protagonist is an unconventional girl and there is an unconventional guy involved too. There is room for spirituality and the supernatural as well. And oh, the art in both is beautiful! This movie is part of a TV anime series, but you can watch it as a stand alone without problems. 5. Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Wolf Children) Episodes: 1 Aired: Jul 21, 2012 What can a young widow do in a world where everyone judges you? Hana had to overcome many doubts when she fell in love with Ookami, but things turn for the worse when he dies. Hana is the mother of two children (Ame and Yuki) who can turn into wolves, just like their late father. In hopes of raising them to be their best, Hana moves from the city to the countryside. Will she be able to handle the peculiar children by herself? We have human parents raising supernatural children in both Kaguya-hime and Wolf Children. We testify their struggles, their far from perfect relationship with their children and also their joys when they encounter the simple things in life. Both films follow the children growing up and their appreciation towards nature. However, the most important part of them is how the children have to define their own personalities in the end. 6. A wonderful and magical Japanese style atmosphere? Also, did anyone notice how Haku and Sutemaru, Kaguyas friend, have a similar role in the movies? And well, the rendezvous between both couples make us cry, accompanied by the masterful music by Joe Hisaishi. Final Thoughts Girls do not need to be princess to feel like one. Also, a princess is not someone necessarily from royal blood. Being true to yourself is never easy, and conflicts between who you used to were and who you are now sometimes are present. This is especially true if you had a childhood that you cherish. However, contrary to what was believed before, now we know our personality can change a lot throughout life! Kaguya and movies similar to Kaguya-hime no Monogatari remind us that even in the darkest hours, we can find a friend and a way to look forward. Getting to grow up, ride the emotional and wonderfully brilliant rollercoaster of each story, and enjoy each and every work that the studio has produced, it's truly been a privilege. I just wish i could forget, have another chance to rediscover these films, so that i can end up falling in love with them again. From returning the spirit of the forests' head to falling through the toxic jungle, i will be re-watching these movies for quite a long time.

And yet Takahata is every bit the anime master that Miyazaki has been widely proclaimed to be, if one with a different style and concerns. His Ghilbi films tend to be more realistic than Miyazakis, beginning with 1988s “Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) ” an unsparing drama about children struggling to survive in the destruction and chaos that enveloped Japan toward the end of WWII. It is the most emotionally devastating Japanese film I have ever seen, while being free of the cloying sentimentality that is a prerequisite for commercial tearjerkers here. So Takahatas latest and quite possibly last film, “Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya) ” might seem to be a departure, since it is based on the oldest-known Japanese folk tale, which dates to the 10th century. Also, its gestation, eight years by the count of producer Yoshiaki Nishimura, was long even by Ghilbis relaxed standards, with Takahatas reluctance to commit being one factor, production delays another. But far from an uncomfortable fit or a labored effort, “Princess Kaguya” has the feel of a true Takahata film, from its unshrinking emotional fidelity to its sudden, exhilarating leaps into fantasy. That tale is known to every Japanese, if not to the outside world, though its motifs are also found in Western fairy tales (“Thumbelina, ” “King Thrushbeard”. It begins with an old bamboo cutter, Okina (voiced by Takeo Chii) happening upon a strangely glowing bamboo in the forest and finding inside a tiny, perfectly formed girl (Aki Asakura. He takes her, cradled in his palms, to his wife Ouna (Nobuko Miyamoto) but the little creature soon morphs into a baby that the flummoxed couple decides to raise. The strangeness continues as the baby grows far faster than normal (in one brilliant, spooky sequence she quickly progresses from flailing limbs to a hesitant first step) while taking a laughing delight in the world around her. Okina finds more treasures in the bamboo, including gold nuggets and kimono meant for a princess — that is, for his pretty adopted daughter, who is called Takenoko (Bamboo) and is obviously destined for bigger and better things. Takenoko, however, is happy with the humble places and common people she knows, especially the leader of the neighborhood kids, the rugged, pure-hearted Sutemaru (Kengo Kora. Instead, her newly rich parents install her in a mansion, surround her with servants and have her trained in the ways of the aristocracy, from playing the koto to painting her teeth black. (The former she masters, the latter she indignantly rejects. This beautiful, accomplished, fully grown girl, now called Kaguya-hime (Princess Kaguya) attracts five well-born, ridiculously self-important suitors, but she rejects them all, even when they make seemingly miraculous efforts to meet her absurd demands. Finally the emperor, who is young, handsome and the most arrogant of all, tries to win her hand, but she spurns him as well — and reveals that she is from the moon and must soon return to the land of her birth. This is all pretty much from the folk tale, which raises the question of what, beyond their way of telling it, Takahata and his collaborators have brought to it. The films tag line, “A princess crime and punishment, ” offers a clue, while Takahata himself has said he wanted to explore what “crime” Princess Kaguya might have committed, since the original story is silent on that point. His exploration, though, has little to do with plot, everything to do with his heroines emotional and spiritual journey — and the way it ends. Not to enter spoiler territory, but the climax is a haunting, wrenching evocation of mono no aware — or as it is literally translated, the pathos of things. The basis of Japanese aesthetics since time immemorial, mono no aware is hard to define, but “The Tale of Princess Kaguya” brilliantly illuminates it with images of life at its transient loveliest, of parting in its terrible finality. There is a deep wisdom in this film, but a deep sadness too. If it is Takahatas farewell, its one that will have a long echo, just like his 1, 000-year-old source. Based on a traditional Japanese folktale, this Studio Ghibli presentation revolves around a child found inside a bamboo stalk whose adoptive parents raise her as a princess, contrary to what her heart desires. There are some gaps in the narrative, but this remains a film that works on several levels. It is partially about a childless couple having the chance to realise their dream, but then it is also a tale of them coming to realise that they cannot dictate their daughter's happiness; i.e. it is about parents realising the importance of letting their children go. It is also a story of female empowerment with the title character giving her five suitors impossible quests to win her heart, since she does not wish to be owned by anyone. Furthermore, her empowerment tale is tinged with regret as she learns the unfortunate fates of her suitors, each one disadvantaged by attempting to complete her quests. Promising as this may sound, the film ends on a low note as things turn sentimental towards the end. Several narrative elements do add up either (the parents having the wealth to move to the city; the suitors all returning within a week of each other after a three-year hiatus) however, the quality of the animation constantly pushes the film through. The hand-drawn frames are incredibly effective, with a particular well done sequence in which she goes for a nighttime run and all the lines around her blur surreally together. The music is expectedly good too. If a far cry from director Isao Takahata's 'Grave of the Fireflies' this effort still offers an interesting, often touching story.
